Designing For The Future: Mutability And Changeability (1)

One of the design qualities that design projects should consider is what changes in a solution, artefact or service are anticipated. Or, how should they evolve over time?

This quality is often called the mutability or changeability of a solution. Both concern the inherent capacity of a design to be changed, adapted to changes, extended, modified and evolved over time.

To illustrate this design quality, I'm going to use the example of version 1.1 of "Platform for eDelivery" that I was the chief architect of. The platform aims to support the trusted exchange of messages, data and information in the Swedish public sector.

In the next post and article, I am going to illustrate practically how one can design a (+1) extendable and changeable platform.
A platform designed to deliver network effects with low marginal costs for adding additional features.

Enjoy
Anders
